United States Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee recently took his family (both children and grandchildren) on a tour through the region of Benjamin in Israel. As they toured ancient caves near Na’aleh, 10 kilometers northeast of Modi’in, they witnessed multiple hideouts that were used during the Bar-Kochba Revolt in the mid-second century C.E. The Binyamin Regional Council provides official tours for officials from around the world, but the Huckabee family enjoyed a much more hands-on experience.
Their tour guide, Dr. Dvir Raviv, took them through on a “mini-excavation” of both caves. In the first cave, the Huckabee family found jar fragments from the second century C.E.—proof of refugees during the Bar-Kochba Revolts. Dr. Raviv then took the family to a second cave that is not open to the public. “Unfortunately, there were looting excavations in the cave, and therefore, there are findings right on the surface,” Dr. Raviv explained. “The children scanned the cave and found five coins, possibly from the Bar Kokhba Revolt period, the Great Revolt or the Late Roman Period. What they enjoyed most was digging in the ground, crawling through cracks, and finding coins.”

These coins, found with a metal detector, were verified to be of Jewish origin. According to the Jerusalem Post, Mateh Binyamin Regional Council head Israel Ganz detailed that these coins confirm the Jews’ presence in Israel during the mid-second century. Ganz explained, “These findings are the best proof of our historical right to every part of the land of Israel.”

After their tour of Na’aleh’s caves, the Huckabees journeyed to Shiloh and took a tour with Sarah Paley and Ruthie Lieberman. In relating his thoughts on Shiloh, Mike Huckabee said, “I have a warm place in my heart for ancient Shiloh. It’s amazing to come to a place that proves miracles can happen, 3,000 years ago, and even today.”
Ambassador Huckabee has maintained a close relationship with Jewish communities across Israel. This trip marked the third time that he has ventured to Shiloh. Israel Nation News praises Huckabee for being “a true friend of the Jewish communities.”
