A new long-term archaeological project is now underway at the location of biblical Jerusalem’s royal acropolis—the Ophel. The Area E excavation is a joint project by the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, directed by Prof. Yosef Garfinkel. The goal of the excavation is to uncover Jerusalem’s rich history, going back to the time of Judah’s earliest biblical kings.
On today’s program, Let the Stones Speak host and excavation field supervisor Brent Nagtegaal speaks with excavation director Yosef Garfinkel about progress of the site, as well as why this new dig has great potential to find royal remains from Jerusalem’s ancient acropolis.
The excavation is sponsored by the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology, Roger Hertog, Daniel Mintz and Meredith Berkman. It conducted in collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority, National Parks Authority and East Jerusalem Development Company.
