Conquering Canaan
Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology
The biblical account of Joshua’s conquest of Canaan is rich and detailed, offering an impressive picture of military maneuvers, politicking, bravado and engagement with divine aid—as well as divine curse. At the core of the account are three key cities the Bible specifically records as having been committed to fire by Joshua and his men: Jericho, Ai and Hazor. These sites, perhaps unsurprisingly, have become a hotbed of debate in the archaeological community about the nature of the conquest—both in the questions of if and when the cities fell as recorded in the biblical account.
